The content of Mn in JIS SS400 equivalent ASTM A36 steel varies with the thickness of the sheet metal (or the diameter of the round steel). No Mn is found in the samples below 20mm. But JIS SS400 only asks for S and P to be less than 0.050.

The tensile strength of JIS SS400 equivalent ASTM A36 steel is 58~80 Ksi (about 400~550MPa) and the A36 yield strength is 36 Ksi (about 250MPa). ASTM A36 steel is named after the yield strength of the material.
The tensile strength of JIS SS400 is 400-510 MPa and JIS SS400 yield strength is 245 Mpa. JIS SS400 is named after the tensile strength of the material.
From the analysis of JIS SS400 and JIS SS400 equivalent ASTM A36 mechanical properties, ASTM A36 is equivalent to JIS SS400.
