In order to make heat or cold work easily and economically to make various components of engineering structure, EN S355JR low alloy and high strength steel plates must have proper formability. Like carbon structural steels, EN S355JR low alloy and high strength steel plates can be processed in such ways as shearing, punching and machining. Although the yield point of S355JR steel is high, the cold bending punching machine, pullout machine, press and other equipment for the forming of carbon structure steel can be used even if the forming operation is quite severe, but some equipment need to be modified.
There is an inherent difference between the cold forming properties of EN S355JR low alloy and high strength steel plates and carbon structural steel. First of all, a certain amount of permanent deformation is required for EN S355JR low alloy high strength steel, which requires greater force than that of carbon steel with the same size. Second, when EN S355JR low alloy high strength steel is formed, a larger allowance for springback should be given.
According to experience, a larger bending radius must be used than carbon structural steel in cold forming unless the shape of EN S355JR low alloy and high strength steel plate is treated with control of the shape of the inclusions.
