According to figures released by the U.S. Department of Commerce on Thursday, Mexico's exports of carbon steel and alloy steel products to the United States rose 10.1% in January from a year earlier to 325,933 tons, up 19.4% from 272,867 tons in December last year.
In January, Mexico exported the most steel products to the United States, semi-finished steel (billet), to 139,511 tons, up from 103,447 tons in the same period last year and 90,697 tons in December last year.
Exports of steel (mainly steel pipes) in the petroleum industry ranked second, reaching 32,993 tons, down from 34,981 tons in the same period last year.
Preliminary data from the Department of Commerce show that the number of import licences granted by the United States for Mexican steel products in February was 2,0272 tons, compared with 18,7595 tons in March.
Mexico exported 3.49 million tons of steel products to the United States in 2018, up 10.9% from 3.15 million tons in 2017.
On March 23, 2018, the United States temporarily exempted Mexico from 25% steel tariffs, but then announced that the exemption period would not be extended. On June 1, the United States formally imposed tariffs on steel products imports from Canada, the European Union and Mexico.
