The Canadian government said on Friday that it would impose a final special tariff, the so-called safeguard measures, to protect the employment of Canadian steel workers affected by the dumping of foreign steel in the Canadian market.
According to a report by the Canadian International Trade Tribunal (CITT), the Ministry of Finance said that the government would implement final safeguards for the importation of heavy plates thick steel plates. Safeguards are an urgent measure allowed by international trade law to deal with the sudden increase in imports.
The Ministry of Finance said that some of the new measures included timely and targeted review of dumping cases and increased flexibility of the Canadian Border Services Agency to deal with price and cost distortions in foreign markets when determining whether dumping had occurred.
