The Mid-Autumn Festival, which is also called the Moon Festival or the Mooncake Festival, falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, usually in September on the Gregorian calendar.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is the second grandest festival in China after the Chinese New Year. The round shape and completeness of the full moon symbolize reunited pieces. On the day, people enjoy the full moon to expect family reunion while eating moon cakes. Chinese take this opportunity to celebrate the end of the harvest season with their family and wish for another fruitful and prosperous year.
In many Asian communities besides China, such as Japan, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, The Philippines, North Korea, South Korea, the Mid-Autumn Festival is widely celebrated.
In 2021, the Mid-Autumn Festival falls on September 21st (Tuesday). Chinese will have a 3-day public holiday from September 19th to 21st.
