Both ASTM A588 grade A plate and A242 plate are widely used atmospheric corrosion resisting steels. What is the difference between ASTM A588 grade A plate and A242 plate?
ASTM A588 grade A plate is high strength low alloy structural steel specification with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance. ASTM A588 grade A plate has a 50ksi minimum yield strength and a 70ksi minimum tensile strength. A242 plate is low alloy structural steel for structural members where weight savings and atmospheric corrosion resistance are important.
The ASTM A588 grade A plate is equivalent to Corten A steel plate. The A242 plate is equivalent to Corten B steel plate. Compared with common low alloy high strength steel such as A572 gr 50, the advantage of ASTM A588 grade A plate and A242 plate is their weathering ability.
The main atmospheric corrosion resisting steel grades of BBN steel are: Corten A, Coretn B; ASTM A588; ASTM A242; EN10025-5 EN10155 S235J0W, S235J2W, S355J0WP, S355J2WP, S355J0W; TBT1979 09CuPCrNi-A, 05CuPCrNi, GBT4171 Q355GNH, Q235NH, Q295NH, Q355NH; JIS G3125 SPA-H, SPA-C; and so on.
