Most steel clients know that the ASTM equivalent of steel grade SS400 is A36 steel, and the two grades have much in common. Today BBN steel would like to lead us to make a comparison between steel grade SS400 and its ASTM equivalent A36 steel.
Steel grade SS400 and its ASTM equivalent A36 steel chemical composition comparison:
Grade | C (t≤16mm) | Si | Mn | P | S | Cu |
SS400 | - | - | - | 0.050 max | 0.050 max | - |
A36 | 0.26 max | 0.40 max | - | 0.040 max | 0.050 max | 0.20 min |
Notes: when thickness is over 3/4'' to 1 1/2'' [20 to 40], incl., max. 0.80-1.20% Mn is assigned for A36 steel.
Steel grade SS400 and its ASTM equivalent A36 steel mechnical property comparison:
Grade | Yield strength ReH/(N/mm2) (t≤16mm) min |
Tensile strength Rm/(N/mm2) (3mm≤t≤16mm) |
Elongation A/% (3mm≤t≤40mm) min |
SS400 | 245 | 400-500 | 21 |
A36 | 250 | 400-550 | 23 |
It is not difficult to find that steel grade SS400 and its ASTM equivalent A36 steel are very close whether in aspect of chemical composition or in mechnical property. The tiny difference between steel grade SS400 and its ASTM equivalent A36 steel is that: Steel grade SS400 has no chemical composition assigned except for S, P is less than 0.050, while A36 steel is allowed for max. 0.25% C and 0.40% Si. And the content of Mn element in A36 steel varies with the plate thickness or diameter, below 20mm, without Mn.
