What is 1045 steel plate?

1045 steel is medium carbon steel included in the ASTM 830 (A830) family of specifications. In 1045 steel plate, the ‘10’ means a basic carbon steel and ‘45’ designates the approximate carbon content.

With its strength and hardness, 1045 steel plate has a wide variety of heavy-duty applications. A830 Grade 1045 hot rolled steel plate can be cut to various shapes, hammer forged and heat treated. 1045 steel plate is mostly used where greater strength is required than lower carbon steels.

1045 carbon steel is forged from around 2200ºF (1205ºC) down to a temperature in the range1650-1700ºF (900-925ºC.) The actual forging and finishing temperatures will depend on a number of factors, including overall reduction during forging and complexity of part being forged. Experience alone will determine near exact values for these two parameters.
