ASTM A285 is a specification for pressure vessel plates, carbon steel, low and intermediate-tensile strength intended for fusion-welded pressure vessels. The standard covers three grades of plate designated as A285 grade A, A285 grade B, and A285 grade C.
A285 grade A is the lowest of the three grades and has a minimum tensile strength of 45 ksi (310 MPa) and a minimum yield strength of 24 ksi (165 MPa). This grade is used for storage tanks and low-pressure, temperature-controlled vessels.
A285 grade B has a higher tensile strength than Grade A, with a minimum of 50 ksi (345 MPa), and a minimum yield strength of 27 ksi (185 MPa). This grade is commonly used in the fabrication of boilers and pressure vessels.
A285 grade C has the highest tensile strength of the three grades, with a minimum of 55 ksi (380 MPa), and a minimum yield strength of 30 ksi (205 MPa). It is used in the construction of large pressure vessels such as reactors and heat exchangers.
All grades are produced in the normalized condition and can be ordered in either the as-rolled or stress-relieved condition. The ASTM A285 plates are available in thicknesses ranging from 1/4 inch to 2 inches and widths from 48 inches to 120 inches, depending on the grade and thickness.
