SAE1050 implements the ASME standard. The grades of AISI and SAE (American Society of Automotive Engineers) standard structural steels are roughly the same, but the prefix symbols of the grades are somewhat different. SAE standard structural copper grades generally use 4 digits, the first two digits represent the steel type, and the last two digits represent the average carbon content in the steel (in ten thousandths). SAE1050 belongs to spring steel, corresponding to China No. 50 steel.
SAE1050 standard: ASTM A29/A 29M
Chemical composition of SAE1050 spring steel: Carbon C: 0.48-0.55; Manganese Mn: 0.60-0.90; Phosphorus P: ≤0.040; Sulfur S: ≤0.050
SAE1050 spring steel is a high-strength medium-carbon steel with low cold deformation plasticity, poor weldability and hardenability, but no temper brittleness and acceptable cutting performance. SAE1050 steel is generally used under normalizing or quenching and tempering, SAE1050 spring steel is used to manufacture machined parts and spring parts with high requirements on wear resistance and little dynamic load and impact, such as forged gears, tie rods, rolls, shafts, friction discs, agricultural soil excavation ploughshares, heavy duty mandrels, etc.
SAE 1050-1065 means that the steel grade is SAE 1050-1065, that is, the steel grade can be any one of SAE 1050, SAE 1053, SAE 1055, SAE 1060, and SAE 1065.
