Characteristics of S55C medium carbon steel

S55C is a Japanese steel grade, and Japanese steel starts with S.

S55C is a kind of special steel. S55C is colloquially called "medium carbon steel", which is iron with high carbon content and can be directly heat treated after processing.

S55C medium carbon steel is equivalent to Chinese high-quality carbon structural steel 55 # steel. Like 45 # steel, it belongs high-quality medium carbon steel. This steel is a fully static steel made by electric furnace, open hearth furnace or pure oxygen converter steelmaking, and has the characteristics of excellent processability and uniform metallographic structure. S55C steel is cheap and easy to process. It is suitable for surface hardening treatment such as high frequency quenching and flame quenching. The carbon content (mass fraction,%) of S55C steel is ≥ 0.4, and the wear resistance is excellent, but the ductility is reduced, and quenching is easy to deform and crack. Therefore, quenching is extremely important, and quenching must be quenched after tempering to avoid tempering brittleness. S55C steel is difficult to cut, so it needs to be spheroidized to improve the cutting performance. In principle, it is tempered to a hardness of 19 - 22hrc to facilitate machining.
