1045 material is a silicon killed medium carbon steel. Higher carbon content imparts increased strength over low carbon steels, such as 1018. 1045 round bars can be hammer forged, machinability is good, but forming and welding qualities are limited. It responds to heat treatment, and a wide range of properties can be obtained. When higher dimensional accuracy and straightness in the productions of shafts are required, 1045 barTurned, Ground and Polished Precision Shafting is recommended.
1045 hot rolled and forged steel bar is a water or oil quenched metal. The recommended quenching temperatures are 1550°F for water and 1575°F for oil. A wide range of mechanical properties can be obtained by tempering at different temperatured between 700F. and 1300°F. Tempering below 700°F should be avoided. 1045 carbon steel round bars can be flame or induction hardened, but not recommended for carburizing or cyaniding treatments.
