Weathering means that due to its Corten B chemical composition,the corten B,when utilised unprotected,exhibits increased resistance to atmospheric corrosion compared to unalloyed steels. This is because it forms a protective layer on its surface under the influence of the weather.
Corten B chemical composition mainly contains C (max 0.16%),Si (0.3-0.5%),Mn (0.8-1.25%),P(max 0.03),S(max 0.03%),Cr(0.4-0.65%).Ni (max 0.4%),Cu(0.25-0.4%),V (0.02-0.10).
About corten B mechanical properties, under 16mm thickness, its minimum yield strength is 355 MPa. If the thickness is between 16mm and 50mm,the minimum yield strength is about 345 MPa. Tensile strength is about 470-630 MPa,and elongation is above 20J.At room temperature for plates ≥3mm in thickness (transverse test specimans, according to EN 10002). Requirements to hot rolled plates ≤3mm in thickness according to EN 10025-5.
In most circumstances, CortenB steel plate and sheet for steel atmospheric corrosion resistance is better than carbon structural steel plate and sheet containing copper or not in essence. When fully exposed to the atmosphere, Corten B can be widely used in many cases under bare (uncoated) condition.
