ASTM A572 specification refers to low alloy high strength steel plates for structures. Among the five steel grades under ASTM A572: A572 Gr 42, A572 Gr 50, A572 Gr 55, A572 Gr 60 and A572 Gr 65, ASTM A572 Gr 50 steel is the most common steel in applications where need more strength and less weight. Compared with ordinary carbon steel, ASTM A572 Gr 50 steel will make the steel structure with same steel strength but lighter weight.

ASTM A572 Gr 50 steel contains more alloying elements than ordinary carbon steel and thus is more difficult to form. But that makes ASTM A572 Gr 50 steel noted for its increased resistance to atmospheric corrosion. ASTM A572 Gr 50 steel is more difficult to cold work, but it can be successfully bent or shaped but requires more force than ordinary carbon steel.
