Surface quenching is a kind heat treatment methods to increase hardness. Aging resistanceand abrasiveness on the surface of the low carbon steel is improved, while hard crack inside is more soft.
Hardness is reached usually by dissolving the carbon or nitrogen from steel surface(Machining processes are called carbonization and nitridation respectively).
Surface quenching is suitable for carbon steel and alloy steel, more than steel of carbon content less than 0.2%. The steel which has done surface hardening treatment can be used for manufacturing gear and other components such as vulnerable to mechanical wear and tear parts.
