What is tool steel?
The term covers tools of carbon steel and alloy steel used in the production of a wide range - cutting, drilling, press forging, forging, exploration, moulding and extrusion.
Hardness and wear resistance for tool steel is most critical and so that tool is to effectively for a long time. Deformation resistance and toughness, good compressibility and compression resistance is also very important. Excellent cutting processability can also be a necessary condition.
The carbon content for this kind of steel is 0.4-2.1% and may contain following several kinds of alloy composition: manganese, chromium, tungsten, silicon and molybdenum, vanadium, nickel and cobalt. Some tool steel belongs to stainless steel.
After heat treatment, tool steel has higher carbon content for the convenience of shearing and punching. "cold working" steel product is used for processing of surface temperature below 200 degrees celsius; "hot working" steel product is used for processing of surface temperature above 200 degrees celsius.
