In the week ending April 6, 2013, US domestic raw steel production was 1,858,000 net tons while the capability utilization rate was 77.6 percent.
Production was 2,014,000 tons in the week ending April 6, 2012, while the capability utilization then was 80.9 percent.
The current week production represents a 7.7 percent decrease from the same period in the previous year. Production for the week ending April 6, 2013 is up 2.1 percent from the previous week ending March 30, 2013 when production was 1,819,000 tons and the rate of capability utilization was 75.9 percent.
Adjusted year-to-date production through April 6, 2013 was 25,441,000 tons, at a capability utilization rate of 75.8 percent. That is a 7.7 percent decrease from the 27,562,000 tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 79.7 percent.
Broken down by districts, here's production for the week ending April 6, 2013 in thousands of net tons: North East: 199; Great Lakes: 690; Midwest: 243; Southern: 637 and Western: 89.
Capability for the First Quarter 2013 is approximately 30.8 million tons versus 32.3 million tons for the same period last year and 32.7 million tons for the Fourth Quarter of 2012. Production capability for 2013 reflects the closure of several steelmaking facilities in 2012, new facilities coming on-line and improvements made to existing facilities to increase their capability.
