The report said that "TATA Steel has warned UK government that it intends to close 2 technology center on Teesside and in Rotherham over the next 18 months."
Closing the center is likely to result in 300 to 400 well paid jobs being cut.
The report quoted a source as saying that it would shift this research to the Netherlands and India.
In November, TATA Steel revealed it was restructuring its British business, a move that would result in 12 site closures and 900 jobs being axed.
TATA Steel employs about 19,000 workers in Britain. It controls 46% of the domestic market, with 48% of the steel used in Britain being imported and 6% provided by other home grown companies.
