201 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese stainless steel that was developed originally to conserve nickel. 201 stainless steel is part of the 200 series of austenitic stainless steels. Originally developed to conserve nickel, this family of stainless steels is characterized by low-nickel content.

201 stainless steel is non-magnetic in the annealed condition, but becomes magnetic when cold worked. The rate of work hardening is similar to 301 stainless steel, although 201 stainless steel develops somewhat higher yield strength while retaining equal ductility when cold worked. 201 stainless steel toughness at low temperatures is excellent.
201 stainless steel provides properties similar to 301 stainless steel and can be used in most applications for 301 stainless steel. 201 stainless steel typical uses include appliances, restaurant equipment, cooking utensils, sinks, automotive trim, architectural applications such as windows and doors, railway cars, trailers and hose clamps.
